The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced a mass protest on 21 March against the government’s planned referendum to merge parliamentary and presidential elections. The party called on supporters and the public to join the demonstration in defense of the democratic process.

Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir said, “The people’s voice must be heard. This referendum is an attempt to undermine democracy, and we will not remain silent.”

The MDP also plans a series of activities opposing the referendum, with a dedicated committee appointed to oversee the nationwide initiatives. In addition, the party intends to approach the High Court to challenge the law allowing the referendum and to seek cancellation of the presidential decree announcing it.

The government’s referendum has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who argue that merging the elections would consolidate power and disrupt democratic norms in the Maldives.
