On Monday, Ahmed Faris Maumoon, the president of Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), announced that his party is ready to contest the upcoming presidential election on its own if no other party’s beliefs coincide with MRM’s. Faris made the statement after meeting with Qasim Ibrahim, the leader of Jumhooree Party (JP), at the office of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom. Maumoon, who is an advisor at MRM, was also present at the meeting.

Faris emphasized that MRM is not obligated to form a coalition with any other party and that the party is ready to sacrifice a percentage of votes rather than compromise on its principles. However, he added that MRM will hold comprehensive discussions with major parties before making any decision on contesting the election.

Faris also revealed that MRM is preparing a manifesto and a policy package and will consider all options before choosing the best solution. There are rumors that Faris himself may be the MRM presidential candidate, but he has not commented on the matter.

In addition to the meeting with Qasim, MRM also had discussions with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday. Faris stated that MRM’s requirements include maintaining the independence and sovereignty of the nation, respecting religion, and upholding Islamic principles. The party also wants to prioritize reforming the criminal justice system, countering corruption, and improving the living conditions of the people.

While MRM is part of the ruling coalition with a 20 percent stake in the government, the party has not made any formal decisions regarding the election yet. The upcoming presidential election, scheduled for September 9, is expected to be a closely contested affair, with several parties vying for power in the Maldives.
