Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, has expressed his support for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the upcoming presidential election in September. Dr. Mausoom was appointed to the Cabinet as a representative of the ruling coalition partner, Jumhooree Party. Despite the invitation to ally with President Solih, Jumhooree Party has decided to contest the election separately and lead a coalition of its own.

While Dr. Mausoom has not yet officially announced his backing of President Solih, his recent activities on social media suggest otherwise. He has changed his Facebook cover photo to one of himself with the president and has been posting statements lauding his leadership.

It’s worth noting that several party members in government positions have left Jumhooree Party due to its decision to contest the presidential election separately. This includes President’s Office Minister Ahmed Sameer, Immigration Controller Mohamed Ahmed Hussain (Hanafy), MWSC’s Managing Director Hassan Shah, MTCC’s CEO Adam Azim, Higher Education Deputy Minister Aiminath Mohamed Saleem, and Arts Deputy Minister Waleedha Waleed.

Dr. Mausoom’s decision to back President Solih may have significant implications for the upcoming election, particularly given his position as the Tourism Minister. It remains to be seen how this will impact Jumhooree Party’s chances in the election and whether other Cabinet Ministers will follow suit in endorsing a candidate.
