An amendment has been submitted to the Maldives Parliament to extend the period for submitting candidacies to contest in the presidential election. The proposal was submitted by Parliament member Ibrahim Shareef on behalf of the government. The proposed amendment aims to extend the candidacy submission period from 10 days to 14 days.
The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has already announced that the period to submit candidacies will be from July 23 to August 3, as per the current law. However, if the amendment is passed, candidates will have 14 days from July 23 to submit their candidacies.
Moreover, ECM is working to publish the regulations of the presidential election in the Government Gazette by April before the registration process begins. The list of eligible voters will be announced on May 2, and there will be a 30-day period given to file complaints regarding the list. ECM will also allow a 21-day period for re-registration.
The presidential election is scheduled to take place on September 9, 2023.
