Maafannu North MP Imthiyaz Fahmy announced his decision to run for the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson-ship.
Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail and Managing Director of STO Hussain Amr had already announced their intentions to contest for the Chairman post. However, it was reported that at the request of former President and Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, Amr had announced his withdrawal from the run.
Before MP Imthiyaz could even confirm his participation in an official statement, supporters in twitter started hyping him up to join the race through social media campaigns. People who were in his support got elevated after Imthiyaz took to twitter to confirm his run in the race. Inthi has been trending in twitter and people have shared tweets showing immense trust and hope towards Imthiyaz.

Meanwhile there is also mixed reactions regarding the withdrawal of Amr which likely made Imthiyaz to join the race. People are also on the stand view that this is not a contest between Fayyaz and Imthiyaz but more of Ibu Solih and Nasheed.

Inthi is terrible. He doesn't do any thinking for himself. Whatever file anni installs runs through in his head. Maybe Inthi is good if we support Anni. But lately i have been thinking Anni is too power hungry and will do anything for it.

The Chairperson is the head of the party responsible for organizing and managing the party’s internal affairs. He has to plan and organize party elections, protect administration and party principles, and work towards promoting democratic standards, participation and equality among members.
The post of Chairperson of MDP was last filled by West Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef. His term ended after five years of service. He was elected for the post on February 10, 2017.
As per MDP’s constitution, the opportunity to apply for the post should be granted for contestants 60 days ahead of election.
The party has scheduled to hold its Chairperson election on April 16th 2022. Last date for interested candidates to apply is Feb 19. In addition to the position of Chairperson, the posts for the Youth Wing and the Women’s Spirit divisions were also opened up for election.
