Ahmed Shamah Rasheed, who was suddenly removed as Managing Director of the State Electric Company (STELCO), has denied claims of corruption after a leaked audio clip surfaced online.

The recording, circulating on social media, allegedly features Shamah claiming he earns more from corrupt practices than his official work. Shamah, however, says the voice is not his and insists the audio was fabricated to frame him.

I did not say any of those things. I am hearing this audio just like everyone else,” Shamah said, stressing that no fraud took place during his tenure.

The leaked audio also mentions two STELCO employees, Azhad and Saeed, as the only people aware of the alleged activities. Azhad, former Head of Procurement, was also removed from his post yesterday.

Shamah’s dismissal, confirmed by the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB), comes amid ongoing leadership changes at STELCO. No official reason for his removal has been provided.

Shamah previously led the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) and served as State Minister of Fisheries. He is the second STELCO MD to be dismissed under the current administration, following Hussain Fahmy last year.
