The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced the opening of applications for members interested in contesting the upcoming local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections on the party’s ticket.

In a statement released Thursday, the party invited interested members to submit their expression of interest by 14:00 pm on Tuesday, September 30th.

According to MDP, only those who formally express their interest within the deadline will be eligible to contest in the party’s primary. The date for the primary will be announced later.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for MDP’s ticket, an applicant must:

  • Be a registered member of MDP
  • Meet all requirements necessary to contest in the local council elections
  • Meet all requirements necessary to contest in the WDC elections

Additionally, MDP has instructed applicants to submit the required form along with a criminal record clearance and debt clearance issued by the Department of Judicial Administration.

Upcoming Elections

The local council and WDC elections are scheduled for next year, marking another critical test for MDP as it works to strengthen its grassroots presence and challenge the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) at the island and atoll levels.
