The recent revelation of gang involvement in the violent protests outside the Parliament building is deeply concerning. It sheds light on a dangerous nexus between government officials and criminal elements. Police Commissioner Ali Shujau’s acknowledgment of gang presence during the protest underscores the urgent need for thorough investigation and decisive action.
On January 28, Ministers, top officials, and government supporters gathered to protest outside Parliament after the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats decided not to approve some ministers in President Muizzu’s cabinet. This protest turned violent. Afterward, the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) decided to seek an inquiry by Parliament’s 241 Committee after accusing the security forces of failing to fulfill their responsibility of ensuring protection and safety for MPs.
The Parliament’s 241 committee summoning key figures like Shujau and Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon highlights the gravity of the situation. The information shared by Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem, indicating the involvement of government ministers and officials alongside gang members, adds another layer of complexity to this issue. It’s alarming that what began as a peaceful protest escalated into violence with the arrival of gang members. Shujau’s assertion that immediate measures were taken to address the situation is commendable.
However, questions raised by Thulhaadhoo MP Hisaan Hussain and Hinnavaru MP Jeehan Mahmood regarding the timing of gang presence and potential connections to government officials demand thorough scrutiny. The safety and security of citizens should be paramount for any government. The presence of gang members in close proximity to government gatherings raises serious doubts about the administration’s ability to maintain law and order.
