On January 28, Ministers, top officials, and government supporters gathered to protest outside Parliament after the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats decided not to approve some ministers in President Muizzu’s cabinet. This protest turned violent. Afterward, the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) decided to seek an inquiry by Parliament’s 241 Committee after accusing the security forces of failing to fulfill their responsibility of ensuring protection and safety for MPs.
The Parliament’s 241 committee summoning key figures like Shujau and Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon highlights the gravity of the situation.
