In a recent parliamentary session held last night, North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam was chosen as the new Speaker of the Parliament. This decision came after the previous Speaker, Central Machangolhi MP Mohamed Nasheed, resigned from the position. Aslam, who was also President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s running mate, applied for the role on behalf of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The competition for the position included Ali Azim, the parliamentary group leader for The Democrats and Central Henveiru MP. Aslam emerged victorious in the secret ballot held on Monday, securing 53 votes, while Azim received only 23 votes. Out of 77 members present, 76 participated in the voting process.

The Parliament has faced challenges in functioning properly for the past five months since Nasheed’s motion of no confidence. This deadlock has hindered the passage of bills and resolutions. With Nasheed’s resignation, there is hope for progress, and the upcoming session on Tuesday is scheduled to focus on the state budget and supplementary budget.
