Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson and Economic Minister, Fayyaz Ismail, has expressed the party’s need for President Mohamed Nasheed’s support in securing the upcoming elections. However, Fayyaz also stated that the party can win the elections without Nasheed’s support.

Following a meeting with coalition leaders, Fayyaz spoke to reporters about his desire to have Nasheed’s support and to work together to secure the election for MDP. He also pointed out the separate political movement Nasheed is currently leading within the party, acknowledging that it was impossible for two people to be at the helm of the government simultaneously.

Fayyaz stated that it is common for party members to express their thoughts on the party’s leaders and that he has no qualms about it. He also confirmed that no actions are taken against those expressing their thoughts both in the government and within the party. However, he stated that if the situation warrants, such action would be taken.

Furthermore, Fayyaz said that it would be best for the country and its people if President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih wins a second term in office. He invited everyone to work with him to achieve this goal.

The upcoming Maldives Presidential election is set to take place on September 2023. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who is the current President, is seeking re-election. The Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), which is currently in power, won the previous election in 2018 with the support of a coalition of parties led by President Solih.
