President Muizzu has said he did not know about the bad condition of the Thalassemia Center, which is run by the Health Ministry. In a video message shared by the President’s Office on Sunday, he admitted he was unaware of the problems and the lack of action to fix them.
.
“I was unaware that no progress has been made till now,” Muizzu said. He spoke after visiting the Thalassemia Center in Male’ following protests from patients and their families. These protests came because of serious issues, like low-quality blood filters that led to many blood bags being thrown away, and a shortage of medicines.
During his visit, Muizzu said he found out that patients and their families had met with officials many times over the past year to talk about their problems. Papers show these meetings happened, but the President said, “No practical work seems to have been done.” He promised to take action. “I have decided today to bring changes internally. And to bring necessary changes to the operations,” he said. He hopes these changes will happen soon, in the coming days.
Muizzu also visited a new building for the Thalassemia Center in Hulhumale’. He said he will work to make services and facilities better for patients. The Thalassemia Center is important for people with thalassemia, a blood disorder that needs regular treatment, like blood transfusions and medicines.
The problems at the center became a big issue after news spread about blood bags being wasted. Families and patients got angry because they rely on the center to stay healthy. Now, many are waiting to see if the President’s promises will bring real improvements.
