The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced plans to take to the streets on January 31, 2025, in defense of the Maldives Constitution. The decision was made at the MDP’s National Congress meeting held on Wednesday night, where members unanimously supported the proposal.
This marks the first time the MDP has scheduled a major street protest well in advance, signaling their growing push to hold President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s government accountable.
The announcement follows MDP’s large-scale rally last December, also titled “In Defense of the Constitution.” The December event, held in the Carnival area of Malé, was the largest gathering organized by the party since shifting to the opposition. During the rally, the MDP presented a petition calling for the annulment of constitutional amendments they claimed threatened the sovereignty of the Maldivian people.
The petition also urged the People’s Majlis and the president to refrain from actions that could undermine public rights.
MDP leaders have stated that the January protest will focus on ensuring government accountability and protecting constitutional rights. They have called on supporters to join the effort, emphasizing the importance of defending democracy and sovereignty in the Maldives.
