Fathimath Hassan, the mother of former President Abdulla Yameen , passed away in Sri Lanka early Monday morning. She succumbed to a prolonged illness at the age of 86.
Fathimath Hassan is survived by six children, and she had been residing in Sri Lanka together with her daughter, Muslima Abdul Gayyoom. Additionally, it is important to note that she is the aunt of Velidhoo MP, Abdulla Shafeeq.
At the time of her mother’s passing, Abdulla Yameen is serving an 11-year prison sentence after being convicted of money laundering and bribery in connection to the sale of V. Aarah for tourism development.
The Maldives Correctional Service has confirmed that they did not receive any request from the jailed opposition leader, Abdulla Yameen,to attend his mother’s funeral. This situation has garnered attention and the Progressive Party of Maldives, expressed their condolences on Monday while emphasizing their sadness that he has been deprived of the opportunity to bid a final farewell to his mother.
