The Jumhooree Party (JP) has officially handed over its presidential ticket to the party leader, Qasim Ibrahim. The ceremony took place at the Male’ Carnival Area on Friday night, where the ticket was presented to Qasim by the party’s Secretary General, Ali Arif. Earlier this year, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih extended an invitation to the JP to maintain its alliance with the ruling MDP for the upcoming presidential election.

However, the JP declined the invitation and decided to nominate its own candidate for the election. This unanimous decision was made at the JP’s national conference held earlier this year. On March 16, the JP opened applications for individuals interested in contesting the party’s presidential primary. However, Qasim was the sole candidate to apply by the deadline, effectively securing the ticket uncontested. The presidential election is scheduled for September 9, with the possibility of a second round on September 30.
