Maldives Parliament was witness to an unusual deposition by Maldives Ist woman Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi, where she apologized for her remarks made during an interview with Strategic News International in late January. Defence minister was summoned for questioning during Monday’s sitting of parliament.
The courageous minister said in parliament sitting – “Some people are disturbed by my words in five seconds out of the 22 minutes causing confusion. The remarks were misreported and taken out of context, I humbly apologies for that.
It is also remarkable that after the loss of Presidential election 2018 opposition (PPM) has not able to digest its defeat and keep raking up issues to destabilize the Ibu’s Govt.
Opposition Party (PPM) led by the Jailed Former President Yameen, who himself faces corruption charges , moved a no-confidence motion against Defence in February 2019 after her interview with Indian news outlet.
Interesting to watch, how social Media especially (Twitter) will react after her tendered apologies –
I’m so looking forward to going to Majlis this morning; my home turf; a place where I’ve spent 4 Terms; a place I love & respect, despite heated debate & political wrangling. Proud to be part of HEP @ibusolih ‘s Govt who believe in accountability. Can smell democracy in the air🙏

In Maldives, politicians don’t apologize. Mostly because politics is a field dominated by men with fragile egos, who refuse to believe they can be wrong.
Today, Min. @MariyaDidi gracefully apologized to those who took offence about her India remarks.
Today’s a new day.

Defence Minister Hon @MariyaDidi proved her strength as a minister in public office today by taking accountability for her words and apologizing to the people on the Majlis floor!

Minister @MariyaDidi is summoned to Majlis today. Cheap shots by PPM, using typical scare tactics. However, good to see Parliament functioning as it should, after 5 years; with the Government ready to do its part on accountability and checks and balances.

I do not believe any actions of Defense Minister @MariyaDidi warrants a motion of no confidence. I will vote to defeat any such motion in Majlis. HEP @ibusolih and his cabinet have my full confidence and support

“Apologizing does not always mean you’re wrong and the other person is right. It just means you value your relationship more than your ego.” ― Mark Matthews
