Former President Mohamed Nasheed and former Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla have announced their decision to return to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), a move that follows a key resolution passed by The Democrats National Assembly on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

This decision signals a significant shift in Maldivian politics, as both leaders had previously left the MDP due to internal disputes. The resolution to rejoin the MDP was proposed by Fathimath Hamdha Mohamed, the leader of Women Democrats, at the request of Nasheed. It was supported by a majority of The Democrats’ members, showing strong backing for the move. The resolution allows members of The Democrats, a party formed after splitting from the MDP, to return to their former political home.

However, not everyone in The Democrats is on board with the decision. Some members have expressed disagreement, highlighting tensions within the party over this major change. These internal conflicts could pose challenges as the reintegration process moves forward.

The MDP has not yet issued an official statement in response to the resolution. However, the party’s National Council had previously passed a resolution indicating openness to working with other political parties, which may suggest a willingness to welcome Nasheed, Eva, and other returning members.
