The Adhaalath Party (AP) has accepted the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) invitation to form a coalition for the upcoming presidential election and has announced its support for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the current president of Maldives. The party, which was part of the coalition that won the 2018 presidential election, made the decision after discussions by its advisory council. The party said in a statement on Wednesday that it supported President Solih for re-election for a second term to protect the interests that the party believes in.

The AP’s advisory council found that under the current circumstances, the election of MDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election was in the best interest of Islam, the Maldives, and the Maldivian people, and because it was the most effective way the party could work to protect these interests. President Solih had invited AP to form a coalition and accepted AP’s conditions, which included getting AP’s full input in compiling the presidential manifesto.

The AP also considered its experience working with other political parties and the opportunities the party received in implementing its policies during previous administrations when making its decision. President Solih welcomed AP’s decision in a tweet shortly after the party announced its decision.

The other existing coalition partners, the Jumhoory Party (JP) and the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), have yet to make a decision regarding forming a coalition for the upcoming election.
