The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) began its primary election on Friday afternoon to choose candidates who will contest the April local council elections under the party’s symbol. Voting started at 2:30 pm and will continue until 8:00 pm tonight. A total of 154 candidates are competing in the primary across councils nationwide. In Malé, voting is taking place at Maajedhiyya School, where 18 ballot boxes have been set up for party members.

Malé Mayor Race Becomes Main Focus

The most closely watched contest in the MDP primary is the Malé mayoral race, which has drawn significant attention due to internal party divisions. Incumbent Mayor Adam Azim is facing a challenge from Ali Azim, the former MP for Central Henveiru. Both candidates cast their votes shortly after polling began at 2:30 pm.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed and his supporters have publicly backed Ali Azim, while former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his allies are supporting Adam AzimThere have also been reports suggesting that MDP President Abdulla Shahid supports Ali Azim.

MDP Election Committee Calls for Peaceful Voting

On Thursday night, MDP Election Committee Chairperson Mohamed Falah said that primary elections within the party are often highly competitive. He expressed hope that Friday’s voting would proceed peacefully and without incident.

The outcome of the primary will determine which candidates represent the MDP in the April local council elections, a key political test for the party ahead of future national polls.
