Ruling PNC MP Ahmed Azaan Marzooq claims he was removed from the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee for reviewing corruption in state-owned companies. Azaan was also removed from the Security Services Committee, with Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla announcing the changes on Monday.

The reshuffle comes amid speculation that Azaan will soon be expelled from PNC after refusing to support a bill to reduce the Supreme Court bench from seven to five justices. He believes his removal was due to pressure from powerful figures who want to block corruption investigations, particularly regarding the procurement process of state companies like WAMCO.

Despite the setback, Azaan vows to continue holding the government accountable. He walked out of Parliament during the vote on the judicature bill, which he says violates the Constitution. Now, he faces possible expulsion from PNC, which could cost him his parliamentary seat.

Opposition leaders, including former President Abdulla Yameen, have promised to support Azaan in a by-election if he is removed from office.
