In a significant political development, former President Mohamed Waheed and ex. Fisheries Minister Dr. Mohamed Shainee have officially joined the Jumhooree Party (JP).

The occasion took place during a event at ADh. Maamigili this past Saturday, where President Waheed and Dr. Shainee affixed their signatures to JP’s membership rolls. The party’s current presidential contender, Qasim Ibrahim, warmly welcomed the seasoned statesmen into the fold.

President Waheed’s decision to forge an alliance with JP comes on the heels of his departure from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) on August 10th. Dr. Shainee also severed ties with PPM, marking a noteworthy shift in his political allegiance.

Elaborating on his departure from PPM, President Waheed emphasized that his primary impetus was the burning desire to channel his wealth of knowledge and invaluable experience towards the service of the Maldivian people. Waheed expressed reservations about PPM’s prevailing atmosphere, deeming it inadequate in fostering the nurturing and authentic environment requisite for accomplishing his mission.

It is worth noting that President Waheed had previously established his own political entity named the National Alliance Party, although the party’s existence was subsequently dissolved. Furthermore, President Waheed had earlier played a role within the predominant ruling party, MDP (Maldivian Democratic Party).
