The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is preparing to hold a major anti-corruption rally in the capital, Malé, called Lootuvaifi Lootuvaifi”. However, tensions have escalated after the Maldives Police Service (MPS) issued a statement claiming they received intelligence suggesting the MDP planned to employ gangs to incite violence and damage property during the event. The police described this purported information as a threat to public safety.

The MDP has strongly rejected these allegations, calling them “gross misinformation” designed by President Muizzu’s administration to disrupt the peaceful demonstration. The party accused the government of manipulating the police to spread false claims and even hinted that criminal groups might be hired to create chaos at the rally. According to the MDP, the event is intended to be a non-violent protest against corruption and the ongoing erosion of democratic freedoms in the Maldives.

The party revealed that they had already met with the police on September 28 to provide detailed written plans for the rally. They urged the MPS to prioritize protecting citizens and safeguarding the constitutional right to protest instead of acting on unverified claims. Furthermore, the MDP formally lodged a complaint with the police, alleging links between the Muizzu administration and criminal organizations.

This controversy underscores growing concerns about the state of democracy in the Maldives. The MDP accused President Muizzu of consolidating power over the parliament, judiciary, and independent institutions, a move they say is pushing the country toward authoritarianism. The party has called on citizens to participate in the rally to stand against corruption and defend democratic rights.

As the rally approaches, tensions between the MDP and the government remain high. While the party insists that the protest will proceed as planned, the police’s warnings have sparked fears of possible disruption. The unfolding situation highlights the challenges facing the Maldives as it navigates political unrest and questions about its democratic future.
