Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Maldives for a two-day state visit. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu warmly welcomed him at Velana International Airport in the capital, Male’, around 9:15 am. PM Modi, the guest of honor for the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations, was greeted by Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel and other senior officials.

Later that day, a special reception for PM Modi took place at Republic Square in Male’. The leaders then held talks at the President’s Office, focusing on shared goals and strengthening ties. They also launched several joint projects and signed agreements to boost cooperation in key areas. On Saturday, PM Modi will join the Maldives’ Independence Day festivities, adding to the spirit of friendship between the two nations. He is also set to meet leaders from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to discuss shared interests.

The relationship between Male’ and New Delhi faced challenges in the past. Early in President Muizzu’s term, tensions arose after comments from Maldivian officials about India and a push to promote India’s Lakshadweep as a rival tourist spot. However, both nations worked hard to mend ties. High-level visits, including two by President Muizzu to India, helped rebuild trust. India’s support, like the USD 400 million currency swap agreement signed in October 2024, has also strengthened the Maldives’ economy by boosting its foreign exchange reserves.

This visit, PM Modi’s third to the Maldives but the first under President Muizzu’s leadership, marks a new chapter in their friendship. It shows a shared commitment to peace, progress, and partnership. As the Maldives celebrates 60 years of independence, this visit promises to deepen the bond between these two neighboring nations, bringing hope for a brighter future together.
