Adam Azim Secures Mayoral Victory in Malé City

The Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) candidate, Adam Azim, is now the new mayor of the capital city Male . On Saturday, people in the capital voted for the new mayor and representatives for three council seats – South Maafannu, Central Henveiru, and South Henveiru.

Voting took place from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Preliminary results show Azim, the former CEO of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), leading in the mayoral race with 5,303 votes after counting 41 boxes.

The other mayoral candidates and their votes are:

  • Aishath Azima Shakoor, People’s National Congress (PNC): 5031 vote
  • Mohamed Saif Fathih, the Democrats: 2343 vote
  • Hussain Waheed, independent with People’s National Front (PNF) : 1888 vote
  • Shuaib Ali (Furahani Shuaib), independent: 125 vote

The voter turnout was low, with only 17,500 out of 54,680 eligible voters participating, according to the Elections Commission (EC).

Azim, the younger brother of Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim, had managed major projects during his time as the chief of MTCC under the MDP administration. He has also led other state companies.In addition to the mayoral election, PNC won two of the three vacant seats at the city council, while MDP secured the third.

Results for the vacant seats are as follows: South Maafannu seat:

  • Hassan Nizam (PNC): 383 votes
  • Ahmed Imran (MDP): 343 votes

South Henveiru seat:

  • Aminath Rishfa Ahmed (PNC): 411 votes
  • Hawwa Nihla (MDP): 308 votes

Central Henveiru seat:

  • Fathimath Shaufa Saleem (PNC): 305 votes
  • Ahmed Rishwan Rasheed (MDP): 320 votes

The position of Male’ City mayor became vacant after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned in November 2023 to become the Maldivian president. The three other council seats were vacated by councilors who resigned to take positions in the new administration.
