Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the Malé City Mayor and Vice President of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has refuted claims that he is seeking to gain control of the party’s senate. He made this statement during a press conference where he discussed the council’s ongoing projects and denied allegations made by a journalist that he was offering employment opportunities to PPM members in exchange for gaining control of the senate.
Muizzu maintained that he does not work based on rumors or gossip and would not compromise his professional values. The council has been accused of hiring consultants with the intention of employing PPM members, but they have denied the allegations and claimed that political parties are not taken into account during the recruitment process. Meanwhile, Adam Riyaz, a member of the City Council, resigned from the party after being summoned to the party’s disciplinary committee on allegations of campaigning for Muizzu.
With the presidential election set for September 9, rumors suggest that members of the opposition coalition have differences of opinion on how to proceed, given that their presidential candidate, former President Abdulla Yameen, is serving an 11-year prison sentence. However, the PPM has reassured that Yameen will be released and permitted to run in the election.
