Hussain Amr, the former Managing Director of the State Trading Organization (STO) during the previous administration, has left The Democrats and rejoined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). This move comes amid growing silence from The Democrats, a party that has struggled to maintain relevance after failing to secure any seats in the parliamentary elections.

Amr, a key figure in establishing The Democrats, had largely disappeared from the political scene following the party’s decline in activity. The Democrats, formed by a breakaway faction of MDP loyal to former President Mohamed Nasheed, had strongly criticized MDP’s leadership and policies, citing failure in governance and reforms. However, the party has not held any major political events since its election loss.

Amr’s return to MDP was announced by former Hulhumalé MP Ali Niyaz, a senior member of MDP, in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Niyaz welcomed Amr, stating that MDP offers the most opportunities for meaningful political reforms.

The Democrats had initially positioned itself as a reformist alternative to MDP, but its inability to gain traction has led to questions about its future. Amr’s decision to rejoin MDP highlights a shift back toward the party he once left, as many of its former members reconsider their political alignment.
