Former President Mohamed Nasheed has been announced as the recipient of the 2024 Global Citizen Award for his unwavering advocacy for climate action and human rights on the global stage.
The award, presented by Henley & Partners, a leading residence and citizenship advisory firm, was announced at the 18th Global Citizenship Conference in Singapore. This prestigious recognition highlights Nasheed’s enduring efforts to champion climate resilience and social justice, which have resonated far beyond the borders of the Maldives.
Nasheed, who also previously served as the Speaker of Parliament, is renowned for his bold initiatives to address climate change, particularly during his tenure as President. His groundbreaking underwater cabinet meeting in 2009 drew international attention to the existential threats faced by low-lying island nations like the Maldives due to rising sea levels. As a vocal advocate for environmental sustainability, Nasheed has consistently called for ambitious global action to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
