The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has appointed Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo) as its interim chairman, following a vote held during the party’s National Assembly meeting. A total of 65 members supported Gapo’s appointment.
The position became vacant after former chairman Fayyaz Ismail resigned on November 23 during a National Assembly session. Fayyaz, who had served as chairman since May 23, 2022, announced his decision to step down citing personal reasons.
In the wake of his resignation, the MDP decided that the chairman’s responsibilities would be temporarily delegated to a member selected by the National Assembly until a formal election is held. The Assembly met again on November 28 to finalize the interim appointment, resulting in Gapo taking over the role.
