Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Maldives from July 25-26, 2025, at the invitation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The visit aligns with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations, where Modi will be the guest of honor, highlighting the deep ties between India and the Maldives.

During his trip, PM Modi is expected to meet with leaders of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the main opposition party. There is a possibility that MDP leaders, including former presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who both maintained strong relations with India during their tenures, may seek meetings with Modi to discuss bilateral issues and cooperation. However, Solih may be unable to attend as he is currently overseas for medical treatment. The Indian government has not officially confirmed these meetings.

The visit also aims to boost economic ties. India and the Maldives are negotiating a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with discussions already underway. On July 22, 2025, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that talks for the FTA are progressing. Additionally, both nations are exploring an investment treaty to promote trade and business opportunities. Maldivian Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed stated on May 25, 2024, that India initiated the FTA proposal, showing its commitment to stronger economic ties.

India has long supported the Maldives in areas like infrastructure, healthcare, and education. An FTA could reduce trade costs, benefiting the Maldives, which relies heavily on imports, and fostering growth for businesses in both countries. PM Modi’s visit emphasizes India’s role as a key partner in the Indian Ocean region. His participation in the Independence Day celebrations symbolizes the enduring friendship between the two nations.
