Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has declared his intention to run for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) nomination in the 2028 presidential election.

The announcement was made by former Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain, during a dinner with Solih’s supporters in Male’ on Sunday night.Several prominent figures, including former Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam, former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof, and Male’ Mayor Adam Azim, attended the event and voiced their support for Solih’s decision.

However, Solih faces competition within the MDP. Party Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, MDP President Abdulla Shahid, and Hulhumale’ South MP Dr. Ahmed Shamheed have also expressed interest in securing the party’s nomination.

The announcement comes as former President Mohamed Nasheed, who left the MDP to form the Democrats before the 2023 election, has decided to rejoin the party. This move adds to the growing competition for the MDP’s presidential ticket.
