Former President Mohamed Nasheed has announced that he plans to run in the Maldives’ 2028 presidential election. Nasheed shared this message with several senior members of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). However, it is still unclear which political party he will represent in the next election.

Nasheed, who also served as the Speaker of the 19th Parliament, left the MDP in 2023 after a major disagreement with then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The rift grew after Solih decided to seek re-election, defeating Nasheed in the party’s primary election. After that loss, Nasheed led a faction within the MDP called “Fikurehge Dhirun.”

In June 2023, Nasheed officially left the MDP and joined The Democrats — a new political party formed by his supporters. Many of the party’s top leaders were also former MDP members. Interestingly, some of them have since returned to the MDP.
