The Maldives Police Service has refused to investigate a major fraud case involving the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), raising serious concerns about political interference in law enforcement.
According to a reliable source, police officials held internal meetings last week and decided not to move forward with the case, which involves the use of stolen personal data from the Department of National Registration (DNR) to submit fraudulent membership forms for PNC.
Why Are the Police Backing Off?
The police claim that similar cases were investigated before, but the Prosecutor General’s Office rejected them. Using this as an excuse, they have now chosen not to investigate the case involving the ruling party.
However, a police media official denied this, saying an investigation is ongoing as a forgery case. The official refused to disclose how many such cases have been submitted for investigation.
Public Outrage Over Fraud
Photos of people filling forms inside DNR for PNC have gone viral, fueling anger against the government. Despite clear evidence of fraud, authorities have taken no real action.
The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has lodged complaints with the Elections Commission (EC), the police, and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). However, the EC still declared PNC as the largest party, further eroding public trust in the institution.
Political appointees at DNR have already admitted to helping PNC recruit members. But instead of launching a full investigation, the police are choosing to stay silent.
A Crime at the Highest Level
This fraud was committed using personal data stolen from a government database controlled by Homeland Security and Technology Minister Ali Ihusaan. The crime involves multiple offenses, including forging documents, giving false information to government offices, and abusing state power for political gain. Yet, the police refuse to act.
Who Will Hold the Government Accountable?
With institutions failing to take action, public frustration is growing. Many believe the police are protecting the ruling party instead of upholding the law.
Will there ever be justice? Or has the government made it clear that laws only apply to ordinary citizens—not to those in power?
