Mohamed Mazin has made history by winning the gold medal at the 5th Indian Open Para Athletics Championships held in Bangalore from May 5 to 7. This remarkable achievement is the first-ever gold medal for the Maldives in para athletics. Guided by his coach Hussain Shifaz, Mazin clinched the top spot in the 100 meter T11 category on Sunday, clocking an impressive 16.39 seconds.
With this victory, Mazin has cemented his position as the most successful para athlete in the Maldives. He had previously won a bronze medal at the 2019 Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG). However, he is not resting on his laurels and is determined to continue working hard to bring home more medals for the Maldives in the international arena. He has set his sights on winning a medal at this year’s Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) as well.
The Indian Open Para Athletics Championships is an important tournament for Mazin and other para-athletes as it serves as a points qualifier for the World Para-Athletics Championships in Paris, France, scheduled for July of this year, as well as the 6th Asian Para-Games in Hangzhou, China, set to take place in October. Alongside Maldives, athletes from Greece, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Mongolia are also competing in the tournament.
The tournament not only provides a platform for athletes to showcase their talents but also offers regional sports training. As a result, a para-athletics player, a para-athletics coach, a para-athletics technical official, and a para-badminton classifier from the Maldives have benefited from this event.
