The Maldives warmly anticipates Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on July 25–26, 2025, a significant opportunity to strengthen our deep-rooted partnership with India. This visit reaffirms India’s unwavering support during our nation’s challenging times, fostering hope for enhanced economic and diplomatic cooperation.
Economic Lifeline in Trying Times
India has been a steadfast ally in addressing the Maldives’ economic difficulties. In October 2024, a landmark currency swap agreement with the Reserve Bank of India provided access to USD 400 million and INR 30 billion under the SAARC framework (2024–2027), bolstering our critically low foreign reserves to manage debt and import needs. In March 2025, India committed USD 69 million in grant assistance for our fiscal year, followed by a USD 50 million Treasury Bill rollover in May 2025 at our request. These efforts have provided vital stability, reflecting India’s commitment to our economic resilience.
Humanitarian Support During COVID-19
India’s compassion shone brightly during the COVID-19 crisis. In January 2021, amidst a global second wave, India delivered 300,000 vaccine doses to the Maldives within three months, despite its own constraints. A skilled medical team of pulmonologists and technicians supported Male’s fight against the virus. India evacuated nine Maldivian nationals from Wuhan and facilitated treatment for 37 critically ill patients in Kochi, despite closed borders. Operation SANJEEVANI airlifted 6.2 tonnes of medical supplies, 50,000 Hydroxychloroquine tablets, and 580 tonnes of food, while gifting Dornier helicopters for evacuations, easing burdens during a global crisis.
Building Infrastructure and Security
India’s support extends to transformative infrastructure and defense initiatives. In May 2025, a MVR 100 million grant enhanced our RTL ferry network, connecting our islands, alongside 13 MoUs under the High Impact Community Development Project. India’s USD 1.3 billion Lines of Credit and contributions to Hanimaadhoo International Airport’s expansion have boosted our tourism sector. In October 2024, India donated USD 4 million in equipment to the Maldives National Defense Force, following productive talks between Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon and India’s Rajnath Singh. Training programs in Indian institutes have further empowered our officials.
A Future of Mutual Prosperity
Despite occasional challenges, India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy has fostered a resilient partnership. PM Modi’s visit offers a platform to review these initiatives and explore new avenues for trade, tourism, and security cooperation. The Maldives looks forward to deepening this alliance, confident in India’s role as a reliable partner in navigating economic and regional challenges.
