Public Income Tax

MDP has proposed to introduce income tax for those who earn above MVR 60,000 per month. Introducing an income tax is part of President Solih’s election pledge. MDP will be submitting a bill at the next parliament to implement the pledge.

According to the draft Income Tax will be introduced where individuals earning an income between MVR 60,000 and 100,000 will be subject to 3.5% income tax. Those earning between MVR 100,000 and 150,000 will be subjected to income tax at the rate of 6.5% while those earning between MVR 150,000 to 200,000 will need to pay income tax at a 10% rate. Individuals earning above MVR 200,000 per month will need to pay income tax at 15%. (Avas.mv)

Financial details of parliament members

Ruling coalition partner, Maldivian Democratic Party has drafted a bill to regard failure of parliamentarians to submit their financial statements as a criminal offense. Currently, parliament members and senior government officials are obligated to submit their financial records. However, only a few members submit their financial details and there are no penalties for failure of submission. The new proposed addition to the parliament regulations would penalize those who fail to submit their documents. (Avas)

Stay order on former VP Adeeb’s transfer to house arrest

The Supreme Court issued a temporary stay order on former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb’s transfer to house arrest. State authorities have been prohibited from taking any action regarding the High Court’s ruling on the former vice president, until the apex court reaches a decision on the matter.

MVR 200 as Minimum wage for employee who working in the Maldives

Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), prepared a document, proposing to allocate MVR 200 as the daily minimum wage for any employee working in the Maldives. In the documents prepared, MDP proposed amendments to the Employment Act and outlined details on a system to provide a minimum wage. (Edition.mv)

Ratification of two bills

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s cabinet of ministers has on Tuesday made two ratifications. One of the ratifications was to endorse printing health warning labels on tobacco products, in keeping with the President’s pledge to create public awareness. The second ratification was on the SAARC Framework Agreement for Energy Cooperation and it was made upon the guidance of the Attorney General . The agreement will facilitate the Maldives to get assistance for renewable energy projects. (Raajje.mv)

Health facilities

The government has announced that its hiring specialist doctors to staff health centres and hospitals in atolls across the Maldives. The Ministry of Health is to hire 164 specialist doctors, who are to be paid a monthly salary of MVR 30,990 with an allowance of MVR 10,200. Doctors eligible for hire can apply at the Ministry of Health headquarters in capital city Malé, and the deadline is set at February 14th. (Raajje.mv)
